Prohibition of sale of animals (“for company”) by the pet shops

For long time, the animals’ welfare associations have been requesting, on international as well as national level the prohibition of the sale of animals by pet shops.
We were recently informed by P.E.T.A. (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) that the State of California has since 21 August 2012 prohibited the sale of animals not only by pet-shops but also by breeders. It was an illustrating example of correlation between law and ethics, as the trade of animals was considered immoral.
The first EU country that outlawed the sale of animals by pet-shops was Austria, since January 1 2005, so as to deter the abandonment of pets after their purchase.
In our country, the sale of pets often leads to abuse, killings and accidents. Main causes of this predicament is the nature of commerce, which regards feeling and thinking creatures as objects, while the State allows this, and the ignorance of the consumers, which buys “one-use expendable” living beings.
The following appalling phenomena are the result of this:
Unspeakable and endless misery of animals in cages and their premature death
Completely full shelters for animals, especially dogs lusting for their freedom in vain
Frequent abuses
Their abandonment in nature, where they cannot survive

The need for freedom is obvious and self-evident among all species.
Animals in captivity cannot interact with the environment and that results in problematic brain development (fewer connections between nerve cells), as was proved by an experiment with rats.
In human society, us, humans, incarcerate other humans if they are criminals and those who break the law. In jail, the individual feels emotional indifference, premature senility, bodily self-abandonment, intense irritability, passiveness, ennui (boredom), despair, depression, stress disorder etc. How could that be different in case of animals, which nonetheless have committed no crime???

Animals in captivity:
Do not live in appropriate habitat
Do not reproduce according to natural laws
Do not have basic freedom of movement and expression of healthy behavior
Do not live according to the rhythm and living conditions which correspond to their species
The examples of birds, which sing to call heartbreakingly their companions, because in nature they are never alone, rabbits, which in nature like to socialize and dig burrows and fish, which live in inappropriate aquariums and often dirty water, illustrate very well the misery these animals feel in captivity, outside their natural environment.
The animals which are bought as pets in pet-shops are being bred in establishments of massive reproduction, in deprivation of socialization, action and basic veterinary care.
The conditions in many pet-shops are inadequate in the best case and abusive in the worst. In addition to this, those which cannot be sold end up on the streets, in shelters or “euthanasia”.
The irresponsible behavior and the ignorance of the real needs of the animals by the breeders and pet-shop owners bring about problems which are related to bad health, manifestation of abnormal behavior, bodily and mental abuse and in the end their abandonment.

To sum up, we would like to stress that the relation between humans and animals is an indicator of the level of culture of one country. The trade of pets and the deprivation of their liberty with all their consequences constitute moral demotion of our species.
The example of Austria showed that there are no practical obstacles in the application of such prohibition, but it is a matter of our will to stop this.
The exploitation of living creatures with feelings and brains for our profit or “amusement” is contrary to “social ethics”, the collective values of a society.
Considering all the above-mentioned, we call on for the immediate and definite prohibition of animals’ sale by pet-shops as well as individuals, plus the imposition of very strict punishments in case of law infringement. The fine in Los Angeles for each animal is 1000 dollars!
This circle of abuse that is “shop window – purchase – abandonment – death has to break.
